How to get to Pamukkale

Pamukkale sits inland in southwestern Turkey, near the city of Denizli. There’s no airport at the site itself, so getting there means reaching Denizli first, by bus, train, plane or car, and covering the last 20 km to the terraces. Which starting point you pick changes the whole day.

Coming from Izmir

The easiest and most popular launch point. Izmir is about 3 hours by road, close enough for a comfortable day trip, and it has the region’s biggest airport for international arrivals. If you’re deciding where to base yourself, Izmir is the safe answer.

Coming from Istanbul

The most searched and the most demanding. Istanbul is far, around 550 km. As a same-day trip it only works by plane (a short flight to Denizli, then a transfer). By bus it’s an overnight journey, so most people flying in stay a night near the terraces.

Coming from Antalya

The third major gateway. Antalya is a scenic 3 to 4 hour drive over the mountains, which makes it a long but doable day. Popular with people already on a Mediterranean-coast holiday.

Coming from abroad

Fly into Izmir (ADB) for the widest choice of international flights, or straight into Denizli (DNZ) if the schedule suits, it’s only about an hour from the terraces. From either airport you can join a tour, take an intercity bus, or arrange a private transfer.

Getting around on the ground: bus, train and car

Whichever city you start from, the last stretch runs through Denizli. Three options cover it.

• Intercity bus and the Denizli otogar: Denizli’s main coach terminal, the otogar, is the busiest arrival point, with frequent buses from Izmir, Antalya, Istanbul and most large cities. From the otogar, a local minibus (dolmuş) marked for Pamukkale runs the last 20 km to the village regularly through the day, and it is the cheapest way to finish the trip. You pay the small fare onboard, and the ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes.
• Train to Denizli: intercity trains run to Denizli station, which sits right next to the otogar, so you can step off the train and pick up the same Pamukkale dolmuş or a transfer. It is comfortable and scenic on parts of the route, though slower and less frequent than the bus.
• Car and car rental: driving is the most flexible option, and the only comfortable way to string Pamukkale together with nearby Hierapolis, Laodikeia and other ancient sites on your own clock. Rental desks are easy to find at Izmir (ADB) and Denizli (DNZ) airports and in Denizli city; from Denizli it is a straightforward 20 km drive to the Pamukkale car parks.
